Why think about a backpack on wheels? Studies show the negative impacts of carrying heavy backpacks on neck, shoulders and posture.
I know, it may not be cool to pull around a backpack. I had this conversation with my son when he was in middle school. I convinced him that his back was more important than looking cool and that no one would make fun of him as he’s the BMOC (big man on campus). I would secretly giggle as I saw my big athletic son pull that back, but in time there would be more kids pulling those bags. Now, in high school, not only does he have the backpack, but he also has his basketball bag or baseball bag (or both when seasons overlap).
So, we’ve been through a few bags by now and I know what we need and want. My choice is the High Sierra XBT.
It has almost everything my son needs. And, it is large. Many are just too small.
It has 3 sections. The first section holds accessory items. The second section includes an integrated padded sleeve for an ipad or large laptop. The large deep tall pocket in the back is good for books and it still has room for a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt. It has a small easy-to-get-to pocket on top for a cell phone but could be used for sunglasses as it has a velvety finish inside. There are a few other easily accessible small pockets.
I think the only request I have for all backpack manufacturers is to get with the times and make the side water bottle pockets bigger. Most people are now into carrying the Takeyama or Hydroflask in larger 40 oz or 32 oz sizes and the don’t fit in the smaller side pockets. I stick his water bottle inside one of the many divided sections of the bag but ideally it would sit on the side of the backpack. I checked hundreds of backs packs and none of them accommodate a larger water bottle.
I also would have loved an ID slot to stick his student ID in – one that is easy to put a card in and out of.
The warranty on the bag is 5 years and it’s very reasonably priced.
