When I first bought the Amazon Echo, I claimed it was one of the best purchases we’ve ever made. It was neck and neck with the Great Northern Ice Cub Shaved Ice Maker (it helps that my wive is always offering to make them – yum, yum!).
We put that Amazon Echo in the kitchen as it was central. We could tell Alexa to play music, give us the news, tell us a joke, turn on lights, and so much more. We learned that the kids could use Alexa to help with homework and answer the many questions they continually ask. So, we bought less expensive Amazon Echo Dots for the bedrooms.
We needed another for the master bedroom, but I had also been eyeing the Amazon Tap because that one is mobile and you can take it with you as it has a rechargeable battery. With Amazon’s Prime Day, they had a deal on the Amazon Tap so I got the Amazon Tap for the master bedroom, and it can also go with us. Sweet!
The funny thing about the Amazon Tap is that originally you had to tap it to activate it – unlike the others which are voice activated. Well, Amazon got enough customer feedback to realize that customers like the voice activation so they added it to the Tap. It was a bad idea to call it Tap. Now what do you call it? The Amazon “No Need To Tap”?
Anyway, what a great device. Last night, I broke it in by bringing it outside for music during my son’s shooting workout. Then, I brought it back inside to its charging cradle in my bedroom. I gave Alexa my typical instructions before going to bed. Very nice.
The Tap is a little smaller than the Echo and that’s a good idea – making it easier to carry around. The sound is still great.
The other recent trick Amazon has added is being able to talk between your Alexa devices in your home (or anyone else who has an Alexa device or even the Alexa app). With devices within your home, the Echo devices essentially work as an intercom system. One drawback of the Tap is that it doesn’t support this feature. I’m not sure why that would be. Hopefully, Amazon will get enough feedback to solve that.
